A few months ago I finally was able to get  couple , big beautiful Philodendron squamiferum. I kept one and gave one as a gift.

it’s growing fine however I recently noticed in the last few weeks or more that the petals are no longer reddish and just plain green? I contacted Costa Farms, since that was the grower to ask about this change.

The person I connected with was uncertain and when they got back to me they said perhaps maybe it needed more light? But I never got a definitive answer.

Wondered if anybody can you tell me if they think that’s the issue. It is sitting on a front porch and seems to get plenty of bright light already?

by the way, the one I gave as a gift is growing indoors,  in less light  and a little leggier than mine , but their petioles too are now mainly all green with just a touch of reddish left on one little section?

thanks in advance!

Although I'm not familiar with this particular philodendron, the two most common reasons I've seen for red coloration in a plant's leaves are light exposure, as the nursery suggested, and stress. My 'Congo Rojo', after spending a summer in the shade of an overgrown lantana, is pretty much a Congo verde.

Think it is the red squamules on the petiole you are talking about , not the leaf [ never seen a red leaf on this sp. ]

They do fade to nearly green .

Love the mature leaf .

So you’re saying that on a mature leaf the petioles will turn green? So only the new growth has red petioles? Hmmmm,  wonder why the grower wouldn’t tell me that ?

Not saying that .. the red petioles are evident even on a young leaf ... they just do not last.

How much sun are yours getting there?

Very little .. the mature leaf pic was taken at a friends nursery after he had removed a few big trees .

I have had this for a long while, got mine from Enid years ago and yes, it has been my experience that the red is transient. I got a share of one of the Costa plants earlier this year when a friend split one up and gave me a piece and have it in a different location, this one gets more light than my original plant, and it does the same thing.

Thanks so much for the reply! Yes , mine were Costa plants as well… It’s too bad they don’t give you better information on the plant even when you contact them? I buy a lot of their plants and half the time they have the wrong tags on them and/or when you ask them about names etc. etc. it’s a big “rigmarole!”
