Aloha!

The IPS 2022 Biennial travels to Hawaii beginning with the pre-trip today, October 6 on Maui, followed by the main event beginning in Honolulu/Waikiki Sunday October 9th. After a visit to the extensive Ho'omaluhia Gardens on Tuesday, October 11, guests will be welcomed to Hilo on Hawaii Island (Big Island) for more exciting adventures through Saturday, October 15th.

You are invited to share your experiences and photos in this thread for all to enjoy.

Thanks for starting this thread, Kim!  Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible the next week or so!  If anyone wants to stop by and/or meet up for HH on the East Side,  feel free to PM me.

Here we are at the Hui Hui Restaurant on Maui, complete with a glowing sunset and Hula dancers.  Nice to see everyone after so long!

The garden tour day I was able to meet up with the group after lunch at Jerry Welch’s beautiful garden which was in peak shape.  The group walked over to Jerry’s neighbor Artist Tom Sewell for a visit to his art estate featuring industrial art made from sugar mill parts and left over sheet metal from manufacturing tools and parts for the mill.  Tom is showing how beautiful a machine part can be just in itself with no modification needed.

Once again short on time to post here properly in real time because we leave our suitcases with the tour company in about an hour, catch breakfast and then from the morning adventure we fly to the Big Island!

However if I were to be forced to select just one favorite from yesterday this Sommieria would be it!

Hopped over to Oahu for the lectures and arboretum tours on Monday. The talks were great, the gardens are spectacular, and all of the folks attending are just as wonderful. Great time. - gmp

So in 1992 I had never even planted a palm!

He keeps them pristine by wearing them only on Biennials!

In HI it is dawn now and I am awaiting breakfast at our Hilo hotel eagerly anticipating today’s adventures!

As I have a few minutes to spare (and caffeinated already) I will share some more impressions.

Since my mind has not grasped either pronunciation or spelling of this garden it is better that I share this sign from our morning yesterday. 

 

The photos in my previous reply came from this garden too.

Although I do love palms, I also love many others plants and this Sterculia species caught my eye.

The red three part seed pods are so distinctive that I guessed the genus correctly. However I was wrong on the species. 
The one I had seen (and smelled!) before was S.foetida. The flowers of that species rightly deserve that name. 
However as one of the attendees enlightened me, this and some other species of this genus while not useful for perfume, might be less repellent to my senses. Definitely no editing with this red color!
 

 

I believe this lovely flower may be a Randsia? but if you know the full name please post it. Definitely one I’d like to grow.

Like double coconuts, Amherstias always make me pause to take their photo. This one was not in flower but the handkerchief leaves are enough!

Many many views better viewed big than on my iPhone mini I am using to post. However you get the idea with this one.

We went straight to the Honolulu airport where we were reunited with our luggage. Those who have traveled with me know that I am not good at sitting still and enjoy wandering even inside an airport. 

I enjoyed the decor such as this:

My good friend and PR neighbor and I played with the efficient hand washing stations in the airport bathroom. As you might be able to tell, the faucet and hand dryer are all part of one device. We think the horizontal dryer portion looks like plane wings too.

The evening included another excellent speaker Jason Dewees, whose excellent book “Designing with Palms” is a frequent reference for me at planting time. 

I wanted to bring my copy to ask for an autograph but since I am traveling with carry ons only I could not spare the room/weight.

It was great to see Kim Cyr (former IPS Director) and Bo Lundkvist (past president of the IPS) at the evening dinner/speaker events and also look forward to visiting Bo’s first garden on  Saturday!

Probably not a surprise to those who have attended previous IPS Biennials that I have just not been able to keep up with posting in real time! 

I have so much I want to share with anecdotes and free day activities covering a wide spectrum beyond what I could possibly fit in myself.
 

Happily I have photos shared from others so you will see glimpses of many others island adventures. 
 

Yesterday for my group was Casa de las Palmas in the morning with splendor and exceptional food.

One of us was caught on camera worshiping the Marojejyi darianii palms and everything else.

I will certainly add other photos when time/energy permits but the color of this Cochliostemma odoratissima made the cut to start.

To start a mere three photos among dozens as I must get some sleep!

Today I opted to visit an amazing Cloud Forest garden in Kona followed by a gourmet traditional Hawaiian lunch and awe inspiring tour of own Palmtalk moderator’s garden.

There is no way to do these gardens justice with just one photo each but just to  leave you all wanting more I will try.

Here are Norm and Voltaire Cloud Forest Garden in front of a rare Pritchardia schattaueri. This tree was part of a planting group from the last IPS HI trip!

Last for today is a photo of the moment I meet (in person) our PalmTalk Moderator.

Yes, that is one of several Ouer garden Mad Fox palms in the background.

Plus I am proudly wearing a Tahina fundraiser 2020 collectible tee shirt. 

As part of my role as volunteer Director/IPS Chair of Palm Talk, he has spent many hours (over years) of virtual  exchanges with me.

I believe our smiles tell the story of one of the best parts of the IPS-the people.

I solemnly promise many more photos,and enthusiastic public appreciation to everyone involved, but it is past my bedtime and another early start for our last day of garden tours.

At Andersen Garden. I was blown away by this Ravenea julietta from Madagascar. I have seen a lot of cycads that resemble palms but never a palm that resembles a cycad!

This is how I feel today.  This year’s biennial has been the best week I’ve had in years.  I don’t want it to be over.

Keith is right. I have a bit of sadness as well-the camaraderie with this group is strong; friendships made on these trips are meaningful, lifelong and I wouldn't trade it for 3 wishes!

It was my pleasure to welcome two groups of visitors to my garden on the free day. It was quite flattering that people would choose to spend sone of their few free hours in my garden, so I did my best to spiff it up. Unfortunately I only took one photo of the morning group in my garden and a few more pix when the tour segued into Bo’s garden. Maybe Elvis, Andrew, or others can add a photo or two? The Chrysalidocarpus mananjarensis had dropped a frond overnight, revealing a crownshaft in a luscious shade of pastel orange, and I would love to have a photo of it.

The Biennial trip was a wonderful way to form new friendships and renew old ones. 

Thank you Kim and Bo! We had a wonderful time visiting your gardens and getting to chat and laugh about pandas-BTW, Kim gets recognition for biggest Forest Coconut seen on the Islands! Modestly, she says she has seen larger ones on the Island and she can prove that if she wants to, but this is the best one I saw-several others were not far behind.

Also at Kim's, a few Loxococcus rupicola. One had ripe seed and she was gracious enough to let us have seeds!
