A couple of years ago, I was volunteering at the botanical garden, and we were moving plants out of the back of a truck into the greenhouse. A few stems broke off of a spiral ginger and one of the horticulturists handed them to me. She said, "These are easy; all you have to do is stick them in the ground." At the time, I was commuting back and forth from Mobile to Connecticut so all I could do was stick them in the ground. When I got back they had indeed taken root. Here are a couple of photos of them today:

It's a tough and vigorous plant. I've got to keep an eye on it; it may be too successful.

I've since lost track of the name of this species. My best guess is Costus malortieanus but the foliage is not a match in the image searches I've done. Your thoughts?
