Hi all!

My wife has gotten the houseplant bug, and has exhausted all the interesting possibilities here in Riverside. We'll be in San Diego this week, and she'd like to see some nice nurseries with good indoor selections.... any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

If you're coming down between July 16 & Sept 5, you might enjoy going to the "World of Houseplants" show at the San Diego Botanic Garden (in Encinitas) - https://sdbgarden.org/houseplants.htm - Their indoor plant section is amazing, even when they don't have a show going. My personal favorite is their "Bromeliad" show though (but that's my favorite non-palm plant).

As for nurseries, here are my personal favorites, which are also recommended by the "San Diego Houseplant BST" Facebook group...

- Walter Andersons (San Diego or Poway)
- Anderson La Costa (Carlsbad)
- Green Thumb (San Marcos)
- Weidner's Gardens (Encinitas)
- Barrels & Branches (Encinitas)
- Cordova Gardens (Encinitas)*

* Cordova has a fantastic selection of indoor plants, but inspect & quarantine if you buy one, as people on the forum say they've seen an outbreak of something there lately.

There were other locations mentioned by the group (Mission Hills? Wild Island Collective? Green Gardens?). I haven't visited those personally though.  Here's the group link if you'd like to join to do research, or ask about a particular plant (they're nice folks) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/3009352385789532/

For the REALLY exotic stuff they just trade amongst the group members.  I've bought a few things off members,  but some of the options are out of my price range. For example, there's apparently a really good "monstera albo" seller very close to my house here in Carlsbad, but I've been resisting visiting since they're uber-expensive ("Don't even look, lalala...").

** The particular monstera albos in above photo have already been sold, but he always has some for sale. There are also members that specialize in other plant types. But unless you're going for something expensive like these, you should be able to find what you need at one of the above nurseries.

Hope that helps!

All good recommendations you made but I just had to note that Anderson La Costa is in Encinitas and not Carlsbad.  Everything off La Costa Avenue west of the 5 freeway but not in Bataquitos Lagoon is Leucadia (City of Encinitas).

Thanks so much for the great recommendations! We bought stuff at each place... (didn't make it to Walter Andersons but everywhere else)... some great finds!
