Ostrich Fern in 8b?

Featured Replies

So last year I planted a small Ostrich Fern near the cooler, north facing side of my house. I live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a warm, subtropical climate. To my surprise, the Ostrich Fern has done really well here and is finally coming back after losing all of its fronds last winter. I see that most people say that the max hardiness zone they can go up to is a warm 7b/cold 8a. Does anyone know why my plant is doing well, and the real question, what is the true max hardiness zone on these guys? My guess for why mine is doing so well is cause it is near the north facing wall, but it is still considered 8b, so I am not so sure.

The big issue with these ferns heat hardiness is humidity and temperature along with soil moisture.

So, if you have a cooler, moist, shaded area to plant, an ostrich fern should flourish, even in the warmer subtropics.
