I have thought about planting a musa basjoo in my backyard would I need to protect them during the winter or should they be fine?

Should be fine. Mulch over where you plant them, fertilize the crap out of them, make sure they have water and full sun - shouldn't be a problem.

Mine went through 18F its first year in the ground with no protection. Only problem is that they may look like Nazgul and give your wife a heart attack.
