Can someone help ID this croton?

Featured Replies

I have a row of different crotons planted but I lost the name tags on some of them.

Here is one in particular I would like to see if someone could help ID.

Now this may be the same croton, I don't remember.  It may be different in color because it's in a more shaded area, but it may be a totally different croton.  It's the one to the left, I have different crotons planted adjacent to each other so the leaves kind of run into each other but I put an "X" on the adjacent croton.

The second croton pictured looks like Geisha Girl.  The first one may be the same but the color is off so I'm not sure.

Thank you!  It may be Geisha girl I did buy one or two with that name.

Can they be the same plant but be different colors depending on sun exposure?  The first one gets some morning sun from the East and the second one pretty much stays in the shade.

Usually brighter light leads to bolder colors.  The first one may be a variety called Exeter, the leaves of which are smaller than Geisha Girl.

I have a few other croton varieties but also do not know their IDs.

The one labeled "A" below, has a similar leaf shape but a wider "tongue" as Geisha girl but again darker color leaves.

then this one labeled "C".

then "D" & "E", not sure if they are the same kind, but with a spotted pattern.

Your "A" Croton may be "Irene Kingsley". Here is a photo of mine growing in shaded conditions. piZap_1636224226648.thumb.jpg.2f3a167c3c3d765f2914ff6179115141.jpg

Another name thought is "Satan". Some collectors believe both "Irene Kingsley" and "Satan" are the same, while others do not.

It really looks like the Irene Kingsley pictures you posted!  Thank you!

I visited the Jesse Durko Nursery in Davie, FL yesterday.  I saw a croton with no label on the pot, I have never seen this one before.  Any idea what it might be?

I have no idea, so I can’t help with that, but what a looker!  I’d buy first and ask questions later.    Did he have a good assortment there?  Any “Stoplight”?  I’m weirdly interested in crotons lately.

There are a bunch of crotons there, different kinds, but I am not a croton expert so all I can tell are the common petra and bravo.  I do not recall seeing a stoplight but I can't be sure.  We were just wandering around and I saw this one.  I wanted to get it but it has no price on it, my wife got some orchids.  She took some pictures of this croton and went back to the front to get the price and they told her $175 and she didn't quite catch the name.  I have to think about it since it's not cheap and I really need two for the spots I am thinking about.

Ahhh….  It’s a beauty, but at 20x the price of about 30 varieties of crotons you can get at various local nurseries around here, you’d really have to be in love with it.  I would have passed too.   I’m on the lookout for “Stoplight” and “Picasso’s Paintbrush” lately.

NuTurf in Pompano had a dump truck load of crotons a couple weeks ago.  4-5 different yellow varieties and a couple others.  I got there the day after the delivery, it looked like.  They had tons of Picasso’s Paintbrush sitting there all last year, that I never got, and now I live a bitter life of regret, as it finally all disappeared.

I saw a bunch of Picasso Paintbrush crotons about a month ago, I think in one gallon pots, at the Living Color Nursery in Davie (west of 95 off Griffen Road).  I think it was $25-$30.  You might want to call to make sure they still have them.  They also have the variegated form of Rhapis Excelsa lady palms in the ground (not for sale) that was very interesting to look at.
