I have some Mexican Weeping Bamboo, Otatea spp. in my yard, and it is looking much the worse for wear.

One whole section of it appears to have died, though small sprouts keep popping up, about 2 - 3" high.

I'd like to plant something else in that location (like a nice flock of Chamadorea plumsa) but would like to know if I need to do anything in particular to prevent the bamboo from coming back. I suppose I could dig out the roots, but I'd like to avoid such arduous labor if possible.

Another section also looks to be in decline and might have to be replaced as well.

Any thoughts anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. I've heard that some bamboos are monocarpic, i.e., they die after setting seed. I've heard that Otatea does that, but I've not been able to find any confirmation. The Wikipedia entry doesn't mention anything about that.

Thanks to all for your input.

The culms and roots are a major mofo to dig out. Best to backhoe 'em out.
