Anyone know a good source for mascarene grass(temple grass, bump grass, ) zoysia japonica  tenufolia plugs?

I don't but I really like the look of it.  I saw it in California untrimmed.  Wow!  What an interesting looking lawn!  When you find a source, please let me know.

Isn't Emerald Zoysia the trade name for the Z. japonica - tenuifolia cross?  You might try googling "Emerald Zoysia" - that should bring up some sod farms which will have "where to buy" lists.

Saipan, you're in S. FL, aren't you?  I'm over in St. Pete, so our growing conditions are similar.  I just put in some Empire Zoysia, which I think is a japonica cultivar.  I got it via special-order from Home Depot.

So far, it looks great, but still needs lots of water to establish.  It's a very fine, emerald-green grass that crowds out weeds.  It's soft underfoot - and is getting compliments from neighbors.

What is tenuifolia like?

Sunny,

Could you post a pick & elaborate on cost etc? I have a problem area I may need to re-sod. This grass sounds too good to be true!

I have found a source  for it here in south florida but they want $50 for a 1' x 2' tray and thats wholesale.

Black Olive is growing it in 1 gallon containers for about $2.50 but I don't think that they have enough for what I'm looking for.

This grass is definately different from empire zoysia growing about 1/3 of the height maybe less and requiring much less mowing.

Trying to locate a good picture of it.

How much do you need?  There is a Zoysia growing in the Deerfield Beach Arboretum that gets little care in the way of water and fert and it grows lower than the mowers are set.  I don't know what species or cultivar it is.  If you want some, and it is the right variety, we could work a swap or a donation of some sort to the Arboretum.

Bren, I'm planning on getting a webcam this weekend and I'll post a photo then.  As for cost, I bought one palette (that's 150 pieces of sod) for a little less than $300.00 delivered to my house.  It covers 400 sq. ft.  Home Depot doesn't carry it, but they will special-order it for you.  You have to buy it by the palette.

All the pieces except two were in perfect condition.  The 2 bad pieces were almost completely dried out - and within a couple of days of judicious watering, they looked every bit as green as the rest.  I'm planning on getting another palette soon.

Saipan, the tenuifolia in your photos look a lot like my Empire - but that may just be how it appears on my monitor.  And I have to ask - what is the lavendar-flowered plant on the left side of the 1st pic you linked?

The house and garden in the 3rd photo are uber-cool!  Very nice!  Is that your place?

hello Jerrry

Thats sounds good. I'm looking to sod in an area about 15' x 20' which would probably mean a couple of hundred plugs or whatever square foot patches might be available.

I don't have alot to swap with at this time mostly 3 gal fairly collectable palms (normandbya, dickenia, verschafeltia, licualas, areacas). I could try to get you some metroxolyn amicarum seeds from saipan.  and if not I'd be up for a donation.

hello Sunny

The lavender plant in the first picture was an island orchid attached to a christmas palm and the house is a friend of mine on saipan whos landscape I designed. It is cool house and is at 1500 ft elevation with a living room window looking right at the pacific ocean.

This is what i know about zoysia availibility in south florida.  Meyers turf in Palm Beach County, carries zoysia empire $145. per 400 sq. ft palette and emerald whiich is another variety for $165 per pallette and cashmere which is the finest leaf/blade for $245.  Havn't seen emerald or cashmere but we have been using alot of empire down here.  I know its a different variety then tenufolia because the unused grass in the nusery has grown now to about 12" over a 2 month period. The carpet grass only mounds and thatches but the leaf/blades are real low.
