Heliconia bourgeana

Featured Replies

Does anybody know where to get a rhizome or small plant? I would love to try one and I hear that this has good promise for Southern California but I can't seem to locate one anywhere. The was an article in the PSSC Journal some ways back about heliconias written by Dave from "Banana Dave's Tropicals" in Vista, CA. He is not listed in the yellow pages and google comes up with nothing. Any ideas on this variety?

Hi All

There are two colour forms of H.bourgaena a pink and a red, what colour form to you have Jerry? I know Jeff Marcus has I think the red form, the bugger has been promising me seed for years maybe this year I might get some with any luck.

Ps I have put a nice photo of the pink form in the Heliconia ID topic

I have two friends that have this plant and it is quite hardy in Southern California. Both have large clumps, but neither has been successful in getting blooms. One of the fellows is a real heliconia nut and tries all types. He has a large rostrata which he gets to flower every year, but the non flowering borgaena is bugging him. Does anyone know someone who has had success in flowering this plant?

Hi,

I am new to this forum.  Can somebody explain to me how to get to the "Heliconia ID topic" to see this photo?

Thanks!!!

Bryan

I bought my H. bourgeana from Jeff Marcus about two years ago.  It has grown from a small seedling into a nice 4-5 foot tall specimen with four stems.  No flowers yet, but I am hoping for next year!  I have noticed that some Heliconia are fussy about water and fertilizer - they usually love both in great quantities while in active growth.  This and the amount of sunlight may have something to do with them not flowering.

In California, Heliconia just seem to need the right spot before they bloom.  Every couple of years I move/divide some of them around the yard to see if they do better in more sun - less sun, or perhaps more protection over the winter.

On the topic of heliconias, have any of you had success with any H psitticorums?  I've had "lady Di" and andromeda bloom but my "Golden Torch would spread just not bloom and was completely killed back this past winter but will try again.

Thanks,

Don

You asked for an explanation, so here is how you find a thread:  most use the Search button at the upper right corner of this (or any other) forum page.  Then you use appropriate keywords, and wade through the results.  Otherwise, you circumvent all that, like I did.  I saw that Clayton indicated that he just added an image to that thread, so I clicked on the Profile button on his posting, which took me to his profile.  At the bottom of the profile page is another button that will show you all of that profile's postings.  I clicked on that, and the second posting listed (I believe) was the heliconia ID posting.  I clicked on that, found the thread, copied the URL, and pasted it here for you.  HTH   :)
