Palm seeds are quite large and easily handled.  I would like advice about sowing and germination of really tiny seed.  The species is Luculia gratissima, and the seeds are about the size of a grain of table salt or the period at the end of this sentence .  How are these seeds handled and what sort of medium and container should I use?  I'm not sure even how to remove these seeds from the shipping envelope.   They seem to cling to the plastic film by static electricity or something.    Thanks

For sowing, some people put tiny seeds in water in a hair color or traditional catsup/mustard bottle (plastic with a pointy tip).  Shake it up and squeeze/dribble out a small amount at a time across your medium.  Helps to keep the seeds from being deposited in a clump on the surface of your sowing medium.

I think mixing  tiny seeds with sand also helps to distribute the seeds  in a more predictable manner.

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Darold,

Agree w/ @mangorunner's advise ( < Welcome to the forum/ Palm Talk as well ) though you can use an eye dropper also, after mixing the seed in a small container w/ water.

More than likely, these will be stimulated to germinate by light ( Believe many species in the Rubacieae = Gardenia/Coffee family are ) so you don't want to cover with much ( if any ) soil when you sow, much the same way cacti seed/ other seed that is the same size require. What i do for soil medium ( and what sized container i start stuff like this out in ) is prepare something light.. ie, leaning more mineral-based vs. heavy on organics and sift out a 1/2" layer of something like course sand -on top of the soil below it- for the seed to rest on. Wet it through/ allow excess moisture to run off before sowing ( and adding the top layer of gritter stuff ). I myself use something like black 3 x 3" square pots ( placed in 1 gal. zip lock baggies ) which makes it easy to monitor the seed. Also keeps me from accidentally over-soaking/ dislodging the seed/ other critters from getting to it.

Rest of the process should be straight forward: Keep warm/ in indirect light, etc..

Hope this helps. Update w/ results.
