Doug, not 100% certain but take a look at Heliconia X "Sexy Pink" ( Heliconia chartacea cv. Pink Flamingo )  Looks similar..  Plant group Hawaii inc might sell them, if you can't find that variety there in AUS.

Yeah, the local Heliconia gurus on our FB Gardening group simply describe it as 'Sexy Pink'. Must say I concur....lol.... It is gorgeous !
It is grown in our region and as the pics show, does OK. I have a few varieties at home, but never quite get the spectacular flower displays. I'm probably doing a million things wrong, but ultimately I think my yard is too shaded. Bright light/dappled shade ( the ones in the photo get little shade ) seem to do much better.

I've heard that to get them to bloom really well, hit them with moderate amounts of Nitrogen and high Potassium..  Will be testing this later.. Sexy Pink is on the " to acquire" list once out of the desert, even if i have to grow more cold sensitive ones in large pots.. Love Heliconia..

Sexy pink seems really sensitive to soil conditions. I can't get these to grow in my costal Hawaii garden even with amending with mulch, manure, and compost (I have alkaline beach sand for soil similar to south florida).

As far as the OP heliconia ID, it doesn't look like a cariba or any of the giant varieties so may be either one of the small cultivars of psittacorum or another pendant variety.

Do you think it possible that it is merely a Strelitzia nicolai?

Now that I look at it again it may be a Strelitzia but I'm not sure!

Agree.. Leaves look too narrow and rectangular in shape. Longer, skinny leaf stalks.. even at this age look too distinct to me compared to any Strelitzia i've seen.. Was thinking some sort of Stromanthe, but low confidence it being one either.. Hrmm..:interesting:
