So my mother in law gifted me a passion vine (Fredrick) cultivar and an arbor for my birthday. She’s excited to plant it as am I. However I’ve read horror stories about this vine taking over a garden.  Can I plant pot in ground to control the roots from talking over my palm bed? Will it grow large enough to cover the arbor? Don’t want to offended her and I am excited but the prior owners of my home planted vines along the block wall near my fence and I’m still removing them 2 years later.

It can.. get a tad aggressive, with a lot of water.. and planted where it has some afternoon shade.  Full sun here could burn it.  Don't recall the roots being an issue vs. how quickly the top growth can fill out.  Grandparents had regular 'ol  P. edulis for years trained to a fence, planted in a narrow opening along that side of their house. Never had issues w /roots. Finding things to do w/ all the fruit was more of a challenge, lol.

W/ top growth, i usually  just trim away growth from any places i didn't want it to grow into. On an Arbor, given it is happy,  yea.. it can fill it in a year or less ( depending on how big the Arbor is of course )

You could plunge a large pot into the ground to control root growth but that may also impact eventual fruit it will produce.. Roots will eventually find their way out the drain holes though.. In a pot, exposed to the sun here.. i  personally wouldn't recommend it. Lost every Passiflora i'd had brought here w/ me. Plus, you'll have to water all the time to keep it from wilting, ..again, based on what i experienced w/ my own..

Thanks, Nathan! Guess we’ll plant it in the ground and see what happens. Jungle yard commence? Maybe..

Had one last year took over my trellis within a year. "purple possum" is the variety that I had. I had to constantly prune it back. Full sun exposure. Wall it was planted on is facing west. Lots of flowers and fruit, but I had to remove it because it was too much maintenance. Very pretty though!
