I am sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but what happens to Spanish moss when it falls to the ground? Does it die or just continue its life cycle?

I am asking because I am currently trying to establish Spanish moss on some nearby trees but sometimes the little pieces of Spanish moss fall off the main clump. Will those little pieces continue to still grow and thrive on the ground or should I try to place them on the tree branches?
