I got out of my cage awhile today and wandered up to Monrovia, California, in the San Gabriel valley east of Pasadena, right up next to the mighty San Gabriel mountains.

Right near the library, I ran across this big Ficus macrocarpa.

The guy at the table gives scale. Huge.

Ficus macs have pretty leaves!

I remember going to the dentist and he had a rubber tree (Ficus elastica) in his office. This is a lot prettier.

Note the massive buttresses in the trunk.

Very cool. Old, CA municipal parks planted around the turn of the century almost always have one or more of those auracaria and camphor trees. That ficus is impressive! Thank you for sharing.

Everybody loves the monkey puzzle!

Is camphor tree more well-behaved in California? On the Gulf Coast, it's a plague. For every 100 seeds it drops you get 125 seedlings!

I get seedlings everywhere in my yard, but thats only possible because of the irrigation. Without irrigation these are not a problem in terms of being invasive - at least not in the interior, drier parts of CA. I might imagine that along the coast it may be different.

Down in S. Cal.?, can't say for sure but never saw seedlings near trees in San Jose.. Before Chinese Pistache became the "currently in-fashion" street tree locally, Camphor were planted extensively in Park / neighborhood behind where the Flowering Gum (Eucalyptus) are located.  The aggressive, local invaders??  Evergreen Ash, and Privet.. Babies everywhere.

" Scientists thought they had created the perfect tree. But it became a nightmare.." - East Bay Times.  Mentions Fairchild as well. Good read.

Nope, too agog over the B A Ficus.

I lived in Monrovia for a while in the late 1990s. Remember the infamous Aztec Hotel?
