This plant looks really cool with it many branches with colorful spiky leaves. Can anyone ID the plant? These pictures are for a winding pathway at the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens I found on the net. I think its a dracaena but which one? Thanks!

I love Dracaena we used to be able to have them outside in So Cal but not here where I live now. I have some in my greenhouse that used to be houseplants. I also bought a lot of the smaller ones that aren't marginal, they sell them at Petco in little plastic boxes as Terrarium plants but no one buys them and they all start to croak so they put them on sale for 25 cents. I put them in my greenhouse stream and they took off and got sizable LOL.

Richard, I wonder if it could be one of these other varieties since it looks very different than the ones I've seen at the big box store.

  • Dracaena marginata ‘tricolor’ — Tricolor is very similar to the standard dracaena marginata, however it has three colors in its leaves instead of two. There is a yellow band in between the red edges and green center.
  • Dracaena marginata ‘colorama’ — Colorama is the coolest looking variety, in my opinion. It grows slower than the other varieties, but has a much more vibrant red / pink coloration.
  • Dracaena marginata ‘tarzan’ — Tarzan is unique not because of its color (it’s the same as the original dracaena marginata), but because of the shape of the plant. It’s much spikier and spherical, and as it grows has a very unique and alien look to it.

Cool, I grow mine as indoor/out plants on the north side of my house. They receive some morning sun and late afternoon filter sun. I really like to add this one to my collection.

  • Thank you guys for answering.

are colorama and tarzan hybrids? They are new to me and it sounds like colorama could quite possibly be your plant as it did strike me as being a bit more vibrant than I am used to seeing in tricolor.

Maybe someone else has an idea. I think the best thing for me is to get a few varieties. Another new one that goes by the name 'rainbow'. Plant name: Dracaena marginata cv. tricolor rainbow

Thanks, Eric I was hoping you would know.  'Tricolor' is also colorful.  I am on the hunt for 'Colorama'.

''Tarzan''  was discovered by the Donald E. Broyles Jr. in a controlled environment in Homestead, Fla. in 1998 as a naturally-occurring whole plant mutation of an unidentified selection of Dracaena marginata https://patents.justia.com/patent/PP15065

Hey, that's a great website on new and older cordylines and dracaena.  :D Excellent for references.

One of my favorite cordylines is 'Paradise".  Has copper color tone to the leaves with a white powdered sheen.  Really stunning. I've only seen it sold once in my area; glad I got one when I did back then.  B)

yeah , it,s a cool website  :)  Another website that every serious plant hobbyist should know is : http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/search?q=dracaena

it,s a constantly updated database of all the known plant  genus and species on  planet  Earth  with all the synonym names   , simply awesome for precise researchs  .   Cordyline ''Paradise '' looks  beautiful , wow !  , never hesitate to buy a beautiful plant , they are not on sale forever , i learned that over the years  !!  I hope to find   Cordyline  ''Burgundy Spire '' someday for sale here  in Canada .  It,s so hard to get specialty tropicals  over here , well ...it must fit inside  a house  with  the weather we have ..   lol .   We have companies that are renting real palms for summer time , they come and plant a palm  in customer's  yard for the summer and they come get it in fall  , quite funny to see  in  zone 1B  hahahaha
