I ended up with two garbage cans filled with pieces, plus a pile of leaves for mulch.

Now I have a gaping hole I want to fill with dirt and plant palms.

However, I was unable to get all of the roots.  I know that some of the gingers and others in the family can resprout very aggressively.

Do I need to get rid of every root?  Or will they only sprout from certain parts?

As long as you got all of the actual crown of the plant, the remaining roots should not respout.

Hmm.  Never imagined BOP as having much appeal to a horse, but then I'm not a horse.

How about some pictures?  HOrses are always cool.

Dave,

I am out of town but will post some pics when I get back to town.

Horses have a very varied diet - including hibiscus, BOP, and mint.

Yeah, okay, thinking about it, horses eat too many kinds of plants, including Nerium oleander.

Seriously.

Dave,

Yes, I had to remove many plants from my yard because they were poisonious to my horses.  Anything in the Euphorbia family had to go, snake plant, etc.  I don't think oleander should be planted around schools, pets, or any other public place where children might be.  I knew someone who almost died from breathing in the smoke from burning it.

I had a landscape design done for my yard and the designer had quite a challenge not to include any poisonious plants in the design.  I do have a few things tht are questionable but mostly in pots where they can get them.

And I don't use any pesticides, fungicides, or any other chemicals.  Only time released fertilizer around my trees.

But I have a constant supply of great fertilizer from them!

Oleander's been banned from the city of NOrco, California, which, unsurprisingly, is full of people who like to ride horses.

The horses just love to eat the oleander, and, well, even the vets get squeamish.
