I knew pineapple plants grew up to 1.8m/6' across, but I never imagined they would grow so quickly.  Last November, after purchasing a pineapple at a local supermarket, it seemed like a really good idea to try to root the top and grow my own.  After some roots started to grow I potted the pineapple in December.  The pictures below show the successive growth.

December 2006 - a week or two after potting.

Finally in April I was forced to move it to a different location, because it had outgrown the space where it was.  This will probably slow the growth somewhat, as it is cooler with less light.

I'd imagine people growing these is tropical climates need to allow quite a bit a space.

The one I am growing in my yard is extremely slow. They need a lot of heat, which I just can't provide. They do look nice and are always a curiosity when people come over though.

I LOVE those a lot. They are my favorite fruit too. Here are three from supermarket tops planted maybe two years ago. The third one on the far right put out a very sweet pineapple last year and a pup grew in between the leaves of the mother and that pup put out another pineapple. This pic is probably a month old and these are almost full size fruits now. The ones on the left are growing multiple pups as well! I'm also growing a Hawaiian gold and one variety from the Walmart garden section.

Having moved mine to a lower light position in April, I thought that the growth may slow down a little.  Well, it slowed down for about a week.  I think I may run out of space quite quickly.  Thankfully summer is coming, so I could move it outside at some point, but unfortunately that doesn't last very long here, so I'm not sure how I will accommodate it after that.

Here it is on 23rd May:
