Growing What You Already Ate

Featured Replies

Many of us likely have Pineapples, some of us have Avocados, and some of us have citrus trees or other weirdness.

Do you have any particular favorites grown from your food?  Or am I the only one who will save pits and seeds from my lunch?

Have any success stories?  HIlarious failures?

Currently I have 6 Pineapples, an Avocado, a Cherimoya, Pomelo, Blood Orange, Meyers Lemon, and all of these grown from the grocery store in pots in Nebraska.  As of this weekend I can also add Jackfruit to that list!  How long do you think I can keep that alive?  This summer I'm going to try again for a Papaya; the last one lasted 18 months and got 4 feet tall.  I'm also going to see if I can sprout dragon fruit, mango, and whatever wonders are hiding in my local asian market.

I have mango, pineapple and dragonfruit that I've grown from supermarket fruit!

Los Angeles, CA and Myrtle Beach, SC.

Tamarind and culinary ginger and turmeric and key limes all have worked for me from grocery store items, even in Virginia.

I have a fruiting cherimoya grown from seed, and avocado grown from seed that finally bloomed and set a bunch of small fruits this year.  I have tried growing many others from seed but they are too small or died before fruiting.  The cherimoya set it first fruit in under 5 years and has good flavor and produced some fruits over 1 pound.  Hopefully in 12-18 months I will be picking avocados as well grown from seed.

I planted a rib-eye bone and now I've got some decent Beefsteak 'maters!

Last years tomato are volunteering this spring.

All 4 of my date palms were grown from Medjool date pits that I ate for lunch one day.
