I recently went to my local walmart to do usual shopping.  I noticed these basjoo banana looking plants for 5.99$ and i promptley bought 2 of them, one of witch had a small sucker on it.  after going home i compared it to my basjoos and found a tag buried in the dirt of the plants and I found out i had bought canna lillies.  I cannot find any info on overwintering or reliable zones so are these hardy to zone 7a/6b?  a little extra info, it got down to -5 degrees in my yard and -20 windchill on the lake side.  any info would be appreciated.  thanks!

Most canna are root hardy to 7b, but what you bought is not canna musafolia that I am sure of. Leaf color and size is all wrong, it should have much bigger leave with a maroon color edge around the leaf. What you have is a generic canna.

Here’s what a young musafolia looks like… and when they are bigger in bloom.

The Canna will not be winter hardy for you. When I lived in central VA it was a crap shot depending on the cold that winter. If the ground froze they are goners.

But easy to over winter.

1) Dig after frost.

2)Cut foliage back to about 1" above root.

3)Gently was dirt off of roots (no scrubbing)

4)Let the cleaned roots dry for a few days.

5)Wrap in newspaper and store in a cool dry place

6) Replant in spring.

Keegan:

Scott's advice is good, though I've had cannas live over winter in the ground in Ohio, if mulched really heavily with oak leaves, along with same dahlias (both were supposed to be dug up but weren't).

WAIT

The Cannas that lived over were a the type grown for flowers, not foliage, which are apparently hardier. (Interesting.)

Glommed this off wikipedia, "rubrum" which means red.

Here's a picture of a Banana Canna in someone's garden, from a cool, if non-palmy website.
