Jungle Drum & Lobster Claw

Featured Replies

This is the first year that the Zingiber spectabilis "Jungle Drum" has bloomed for me. Also, I had to show my Heliconia Rostrata. I have a few other heliconia that seem to tolerate our winters so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they will bloom too. Its been trial and error finding ones that will survive in Los Angeles.

That lobster claw is amazing. Do you know if they tolerate heat and cold very well? I gotta get one of those. Funny how they really do look like a lobsters claw.

Congrats and well done! More evidence that H. Rostrata cam flower here in the right conditions. Something to aspire to!

I'm about a mile from the beach ... so it never gets to hot but can be cool and damp through the winter. I have a 4 different types of Rostrata this one seems to be doing the best. The tags have been lost so I can't tell you the variety but can tell you the dwarf one struggles. I noticed today my Heliconia "distans" is starting to bloom too. Location does make a difference. I have a "distans" in my backyard the dies back to the ground in winter but the one planted in the front yard keeps truckin on ....
