Happy to have a Zamia encephalartoides growing well in the garden.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Great looking specimen.  Your plant shows that it's appropriately named.  The smaller plants I have seen have been less appealing, but after seeing yours, I may have to track down a small one and be patient!

Very nice Zamia!

These are a tough grow in the ground here Tracy. They come from a hot area in Columbia. Mine looses its leaves every year from the winter. Even after justn35-36 degree weather. Right now mine is just a caudex awaiting a new flush. I might dig it up and put it in a pot and see if that helps.

Al, yours looks great. Has it coned?

Thanks for the tip on that Len.  All my Zamia's are still in pots, I think of them as being a lot more tender than Encephalartos and Cycas, but I need to break out from that.  Perhaps Z encephalartos shouldn't be the first Zamia I try to put in the ground here.  Al's certainly looks good, so you can see why I am tempted.

Thanks for comments guys.  No mine has not yet coned.  Rarely gets supplemental water, only lightly fertilized once but I do try to keep a light mulch around it .

Your 900 - 1150 mm average rainfall is still substantially more than our average (Len's and mine here in San Diego), so we would definitely need to supplement the rainfall with irrigation.  We also get the rain during the season it doesn't want it, and are dry when it most likely wants the water (summer).  Still after seeing yours, its tempting...
