Does anyone have experience with growing these plants? What's their growth rate and will they be cold hardy in a 8b microclimate?

I've also read that they prefer shade and constantly moist soil, is this true?

They grow well here except in colder winters. They seem very sensitive to long cool periods. We had a bunch planted but the winter of 2009-10  killed most of them. The others grew back slow and stunted the first year. That year we only got down to 29F but had 12 nights between 30-32 and many in the upper 30s/low 40s with many cool days in the low 50s.

They like bright shade and evenly moist but not soggy soil.

What Eric said.

I have one, and a variegated one - they are awesome plants. After they flower, leave the old flowers - and it will self-sow in the pots.

They do not like too much cold - or heat.

I will, they're already putting out a new leaf. I'm thinking about just keeping them in nursery pots, I'm going to leave them outside from March-November but I don't see how they could survive a winter here. Especially since Eric said they're very sensitive to long, cool periods. That basically describes our winters here, along with the occasional dip into the teens or 20's. But who knows, I may plant one this spring and try to protect it if it doesn't get too large.
