Ficus columnaris

Hello,

I'd like to get my hands on the Lord Howe Island banyan, Ficus columnaris. I'd like to trial it outside here in Houston. Interested in plants or seeds.

Let me know what you've got, Daniel

Welcome to Palmtalk ! :)

How large is your property ? This tree can completely dominate a residential property. I don't have a source, but it is available here in California.

Here are two habital photos, showing the tree enveloping a Howea forsteriana. (Please excuse my poor photography.)

Hi Darold, thanks for the welcome.

I am trying to get ones sourced more directly from LHI. I understand the F. columnaris from California (like those at the Huntington) do not have the same propensity to form aerial roots.

I have some options as far as locations go and do not intend to plant one near my residence. :winkie:

They probably do not get such aerial roots due to the low humidity in CA......taking one from here and putting it in Houston might surprise you.

Daniel, the LHI nursery is closed, since the retirement of Larry Wilson. Last March we were told that a new person intends to re-open, but I don't know if anything really developed. Do you have more current info since March ?
