Went shopping for trees

So I've been wanting to get some delonix regia trees for a while now and was thinking about driving to SD or ordering some online, good thing I didn't.

Yesterday I stopped by a local nursery down the street from my house. I've bought from them before and I knew they sometimes would bring stuff in from SD. Like kentia palms and stuff like that. And to my surprise they said they sell them in all sizes, even boxed ones at a low price. They said the delonix regia trees are becoming very popular around here. :) but that they had none in stock right now :( !!!

Another guy sitting there remembered they had one last 5g but looked pretty bad. It looked stressed and was infested with ants. post-9726-0-30107400-1441558877_thumb.jppost-9726-0-10329200-1441558897_thumb.jppost-9726-0-17115300-1441558914_thumb.jp

He said he'd let me have it for 10 bucks so I took it. :)

I kept walking the nursery looking for some color and found these pretties post-9726-0-40526300-1441559095_thumb.jp

As we walked the isles of plants we stumbled upon some more delonix regia trees. :) these were little guys 1g size. I took two more and told him I'd be back for more :) :) :)

Next was a man who I knew was in to palm trees a bit so I stopped by to see if he had anything new.

To my bigger surprise this man had a bunch of delonix regia trees. He was stocked! :)

I bought the best one I could find and picked the tallest and thickest one. I want some shade! As we walked around the nursery this tree caught my attention

I don't remember ever seeing it around here before. It has BIG heart shaped leaves and I was told that when it flowers, they only last one day, but that the flowers change color throughout the day. Sounds cool! They had these in stock so I bought one too. The man had one in full sun and was ready to go in the ground. The rest were under shade.

I don't know anything else about the tree other than the name they gave me. "Arbol de algodon". The man said it grows in the part of Mexico where he's from. I think it looks pretty tropical, what do you guys think? Anyone know more about it? Trying to decide where to plant it.

The tree in the pics was just recently trimmed because the canopy was too much shade for the area. He trimmed it halfway. It was funny because the tree was sitting in a 15g container and ended up just growing into the ground because the guy who originally wanted this tree never picked it up.

My biggest delonix tree is going right where Mickey is at. It's a hot spot all year especially in the summer. I need shade for my jacuzzi and gazebo. I also want to plant my other tree here in the backyard. I was thinking about putting it on that left corner on top of my yard. I thought queen palms would work but they get fried when we have too many heatwaves during summer and also get beat with the wind and get burned with the freezes in Winter. Lol

Once I have a nice canopy I can plant some more awesome palms in there... that's the idea!

Whoo ee!

Keep us apprized!

When that delonix blooms we'll all scream . . . .

But don't forget a few more palms.

They like heat. That's all I know about them.

Destructive root system. Do not put to close to cement slabs. Here in south Florida they crack asphalt if put to close to street.

VERY cool acquisition!  How bizarre though......earlier today for some reason I was thinking about the Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) I planted at my house in Lehigh Acres. How I always loved that tree since learning about it in school and when I relocated to the SW coast of Florida it was "game on". The one I planted was a 3 gallon size and a year later i relocated again to NSB but - out of curiosity I Googled my old address in Lehigh and (via street view) that tree had become HUGE!

The good old Pea Family!  :)
