We planted an Anigozanthos 'Big Red' on our south facing wall about two years back. Forgot what size container it was in but it was a decent size already. Just love the plant and the hummingbirds too. I understood that the plant, one of the larger kangaroo paws, get to be about 5 to 6 feet tall. And that pretty much was what it was last year.

Now here's a photo of it in January, 2015 and then now in June:

It has to be 8 to 9 feet tall now. It really dwarfs us when we walk past it. And I'm wondering if this is it for height or can I expect a two-story plant next year LOL?

So how tall do you guys in Australia see these in your gardens?

Wendy, your Kangaroo paw is getting so high because the "rhizome" is growing ontop of older clumps as its run out of room to spread like they do naturally here in the land of Oz, so divide as much as you can and replant in other sunny areas ( or give to friends) and what you keep at ground level will stay low .

Thanks for growing another great plant from Downunder :)

Thanks for the info Pete. I didn't realize that. We are planning on taking out the side shrubs in that bed as they are getting crowded out anyway. Loving all of our paws and grateful for the ones that are more cold tolerant in our area and can take the heat. Just stunning plants. Not Wendy BTW.

Here's a closeup of Big Red this year and one of Tequila Sunrise. The orange one has more flower bed space to grow although we saw it shoot up in height quite a bit too this year. We had given them frost protection this winter as they were in the same bed as our Strelitzia reginae and thought the extra heat retained by the frost cloth might have had something to do with their increased growth. Big Red was on it's own in the elements as well as our Bush Rangers.

Our Bush Rangers seem content with the space they have and are a nice height.

Your welcome Debbie, sorry I called you Wendy, I did look you up to see your name and when I did post a few minutes later Debbie became Wendy, and yes I do have "short term" memory loss , but luckily I also have a "memory like an Elephant " :) Pete

Debbie your lucky to have such a great selection to pick from. I only see the red and yellow ones here and they seem to sell them at the wrong time of the year here, Taller and smaller ones in fall. And if they do have any in spring there always just finishing blooming…. :bemused:
