Petrea volubilis, also known as Queen's Wreath.

Takes full sun.  Once established, fairly drough-tolerant too.

I just sprouted a bunch of seeds.  Hopefully I won't have to wait long before I can enjoy the same for my self.

Nice Ron,

We actually planted one of these in Hawaii on our last trip out.  My wife and son really liked it.  I have to say that I am very scared of what this vine will do in that climate.  Looks like a nice one for SoCal.

I planted this three or four years ago.  I put up a copper pipe on which to support itself.  I think it's about eight feet wide now.  I've heard in Mexico, it can get well over 40 feet.  I'll be happy if it covers the 25 feet of piping.  I think it is now fairly established, but don't really expect it to get rampant.  This time of year is its major flush, but it also has a nice one in September.

I got some tree seeds of Petrea glandulosa and P. aspera from Chris Baasch a couple of years ago.  I only have one little P. aspera twig to show for it.  I hope it leafs out this year like it did last year.

Ron,

I would love to see a picture of your copper trellis if you get a chance.  I seem to buy a lot of flowering vines without considering where to put them, so any ideas, especially with your landscaping sense, would be greatly appreciated.

I take it the P. aspera has the same curious sandpaper texture?  My P. volubilis sprouted like weeds, so maybe it's the species that make the difference, or possibly old seed.

Ron,

All I've done with this vine is sort of wrap some of the newer branches around the pipe as it grows along.  I've got the pipe about a foot beneath the water scupper.  I'm not sure what kind of landscaping skill that requires though.   ''

That vine is beautiful.  We saw some nice, but smaller, specimens at Tropiflora today and I was going to grab one, but the DearHusband said No.

That's a lovely photo.  Petrea has a very ethereal beauty - and a wonderful deep color.
