Hi Mike, this looks familiar and i think Tropiflora used to have it. Let me check. Looks like an Aechmea although the inflo looks like that of the Ursulaea genus.

It's not Ursulaea macvaughii which has a distinctly pendant flower. The only other species I'm aware of is U. tuitensis which has an upright infructescence but not nearly as dense as the one pictured. It looks like an Aechmea species.

No one cares about your current yard temperature 🙃

Thanks for the info so far. Let me know if more photos would help.

That photo is fine. The yellow flowers are the key. I may be wrong but the resemblance is there. Perhaps Pete will chime in, he's more on top of Aechmea ID than I am.

Here are some additional photos of the inflorescence, which, as you can see, is seriously spiny. I should also add that these are quite large, going at least 3 feet (1 m) tall.

Jody,

Talk to Alan Heardon. He will know. I would say Aechmea, not sure which one.

Gonz, I agree with your post 4 of Aechmea kuntzeana ( lucky this isnt talk back radio) :) and yes "without" the flower pic it could be 1 of "many " Aechmea to try and ID.

Gonz, you know way more about Broms than me Sir, bar the "Carcharodon Hybrids" ( the best stuff) :)

Jody, the FCBS site is Phenomenal
