Anybody growing Dracaena umbraculifera?

Featured Replies

It took me a while, but I finally found out what type of Dracaena I have--everyone I asked gave me a smart ass response like, "I don't know--I'm not a Dracaena guy". A little bit of research online, going through the known species in alphabetical order, finally gave me a culprit.

History: My Arborist uncle gave me a cutting a few years back and told me it was rare, and to grow it. Well, I did and it gets lots of comments for sure. I am happy to just know what it is. Also happy to be providing ex-situ for it. Is anyone else growing this plant? Seems pretty rare for such an easy grow...

If by chance my research has taken me in an erroneous direction, please shed some light! Thanks

Google images does not produce any remarkable trees, but yours looks great. Is it forming any offsets yet? Maybe you want to chop off the top half and send it to me? JK

So many species,

so little time.

Jerry, Google the picture of the Missouri Botanical garden and it looks just like mine, although 100 years older. My uncle gave it to me as a propagation--told me to plant it so I staked it up, a year later took off the stake and now it's pretty impressive. I think I saw another image on google from France... no bifurcation as of yet. Waiting for it to bloom, although from the pictures I have seen, it may not be visible, when it does..?

Wow, I guess not...

You guess not what ?

I guess no one is growing this...

I might be - but all identification attemps have been inconclusive. I keep getting different answers on my three Dracaenas - The photos are too big to load, unfortunately, but one of them looks like it could be the same as yours.

I'd LOVE one of these, though!

Looks similar to what was growing at the house in Palmetto Bay from Richard Button. Will try to find pics.

Or give me the address and I can ride by--that's basically down the street from me...

Let me try these. Tree was basically unbranched (with one lower pup) and well into palm canopy. Sorry that pics are kinda crappy, and over-exposed... Not sure if the tree is still there, and access is probably an issue, but... Perhaps just D. arborea, but I think it was something else...

One of mine looks like that, too…. without the wavy edges.

Why, oh why, can't it be easier to ID these things?

Blast it! I just tried to upload pics of mine here, and "too large" Ugh! I'm not tech savvy enough to do something about that...

We definitely need a Dracaena expert here!

Fastfeat--that looks like her. May even be the same dna--they are, after all, a Draceana.

Send me a PM. I'll talk to you about location and access issues if you're interested.

Jody-- thanks for confirming the ID of the specimen at my former house; I'd imagine it looks nearly identical to your larger one pictured.

Do you propagate via large cuttings? If so, do they (stock plants?) sprout well following cutting back?

I wasn't confirming an ID, just showing photos of plants that we have that are very similar to Andrew's. I really don't know what species it is. I also don't know if it would propagate via cuttings. All the plants we have are single trunked, so my guess is that it wouldn't work like the other dracaenas that are so easy to propagate.
