Robinia is naturalized here - and that's not it.

Robinia pods are very small, shiny chocolate brown, and not curvy.

I agree that it does not look like an Acacia, though.

Ask somebody if they've seen the flowers. That will help a lot.

Was the tree thorny? I can't tell from the photos.

I think that the tree is a Gleditsia.

Does it have thorns? Is the seed pod old and fungus-y?

We really need to know about the flowers. It's probably only one of 3 options; white, yellow, or pink, and potentially red. The shape of the flower cluster also.
