Small plastic pots needed - Many ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It's that time of year when I bring everything back inside for the winter (as well as an ongoing ever-growing population of seedlings coming up) I am needing a lot more small plastic pots - preferably deeper than wide - Something like 2.5 or 3.5 inch wide, and 3-5 inches deep. I'm not going to be picky about sizes though. I just know that I need many more small pots.

I strongly support recycling / reusing, rather than supporting the plastics industry - so wanted to check here first before buying new, which I hate to do, for that reason.

They do not need to be clean. Slightly broken, but still useable is fine too.

Let me know what you may have.

Square preferred, to best "pack" them together to conserve space.

Thanks!

Hi gang

I don't mean to press, but this is a time sensitive request - with fall upon me, and am trying not to support the plastics industry.

I know that most of us use band / tree pots which are similar to what I need.

Check nurseries in your area. I sell nearly all of my empties every year.

Thank you - unfortunately nurseries up here do not generally dael with such small pots - only 4 inch and up, of which I have thousands.

(Yes, I've tried.)

That said - Do you have any at this time / this year?

Thanks!

Pick up some plastic disposable drinking cups from a grocery store. Poke a hole on the bottom.

The cups are a great idea and what I do most of the time as well for liners that small. They are normally called quart liner pots for what I think you are describing. You can also use liner trays and those come in all kinds of sizes.

The cups are indeed a great idea - which I do use, for starting seeds. They have a strong tendency to fall over, given that the bottom is narrower than the top, and traying them up, is a nightmare as a result. Being circular (and wider at the top) they are actually not that space-efficient. Good thinking, though. Not to mention the enormous amount of time it takes to cut holes out with a scissor along the edge of the bottoms - we are talking hundreds or thousands ….

As for the liner tray pots - are you talking about the cell trays, where there are multiple "pots" attached to each other? I need individual pots, because when plants sell, I need to be able to grab that one pot, and essentially empty it, and put another in its place.

I appreciate all the ideas, but I know what I am looking for, which will best suit my needs at this time. Thank you.

So, hopefully somebody has a stash of used 2.5 - 3 inch pots hanging around.

Nobody has a bunch ? It's getting late - and would really rather not buy new. (Hate supporting the plastics industry.)

This is the last time I will ask before buying new - Anyone have a pile sitting somewhere?

In case nobody has any - where do you buy yours, and for how much?

What I am going to buy, if nobody here comes through, costs 9 cents each, shipped. Will I find anything cheaper? I don't know the pricing on "band pots" or typical palm liner pots.

Nurserymen are pot hoarders, I know that my pots that are under a 1g are considered gold because this is what I germimate/ clone in the most. And if I start giving them away/ selling them then I would be in your shoes. I just traded a landscaper 500 $ trade value in palms for a huge stack of pots he had accumulated. There not cheap, so I trade when I can check craigslist that my best source.

Ah - I thought it was just me :)

Thanks - good to know!

depends on the type of pots but for palms i usually buy from stuewe&sons and for bromeliads i buy from greenhousemegastore

band pots https://www.stuewe.com/products/anderson.php (never was a fan of these)

small pots that are deeper than wide https://www.stuewe.com/products/toplastics.php (i use the TO355)

i was pretty much looking for exactly what you are looking for for my sprouted seeds and went with the TO355 and couldn't have been happier, they're fairly rigid although i wish they were a bit thicker but they were pretty cheap. don't buy the trays, they're flimsy and hard to carry if you use all the slots because of the weight when full you'll need to find some way to support it, they'll work t if you never planning on moving them. i put my pots in small soda trays and i fit 12 pots in one tray perfectly.
