I planted this Dendrocalamus asper 'betung hitam' about 2 years ago, it had dried out in its pot and only had a few small culms. Last year it had one new shoot that topped out at around 15'. This is what started 10 days ago and it's already to the top of my 6' privacy fence, and there is another one about 4 days behind it! I was told it would get big (well, I think "Massive" might have been the word), I had done some reading that says 70+ feet is definitely not out of the question. You don't (well, I didn't), have a concept of that when it was planted as nothing more than two little bushy 2' culms, but I'm starting to get some perspective now that this is shooting out of the ground. My neighbors already think I am a little crazy, what are they going to think when they see this poking up from my backyard?

Anybody have a mature one of these planted?

Wayne, we have a few of these here on our property, heres an old pic I posted a few yrs back of my wife Cassandra giving scale plus pics I posted on a thread ( sorry cant enlarge them) with this specimen at our creek ( our daughter Shakira giving scale), Black asper gets very thick impressive culms esp if it has lots of water and nutrient rich soil.

Edit..Shooting pics are of Dendrocalamus brandisii, Black asper are same size if not larger

WOW, that is impressive. How old are those plants? I bought a regular Dendrocalamus asper about a year ago and just planted it up against a large live oak, about 15ft. away from the 'betung hitam' I think they will eventually dwarf the oak if the cold/frost doesn't get to them.

They are 15yo in the pics but all Dendrocalamus start pumping out "massive" shoots even in their 3rd yr but come the 7th they are near maximum size so you havnt got a long wait, I remember the buzz years ago.
