I like to plant different things and these are unique looking. I have an opportunity to get a few from a friend and wanted to know what the requirements for these bromeliads are if planted in the ground. The specific plant is cryptanthus 'Elaine'.

Looking to see if they need shade, full sun, wet soil, etc? Any help will be appreciated.

Have had a couple hybrids, no idea what their names are, in ground for years. Slow growing for sure. Mine are in silty sand and dry quickly. Constant and reliable blooms (!) every year. You would probably need to plant out quite a few to maximize the effect. Mine were kinda just thrown in for the hell of it. Try planting some in a preferred bromeliad mix (25% potting mix, 25% pumice and 50% small orchid bark) and see how that works.

I have a half dozen varieties planted under a lemon tree in the back. Here in FL they need shade - they burn within hours in full sun. Probably the case in CA too. Mine grow, offset, mother plants die back, repeat cycle. I had trays of potted Cryptanthus till I pulled and sold the offsets on eBay to cut back. My brom interest has shifted to those overlooked, non-monocarpic Dyckias and Hechtias. I rather like broms that don't bloom, then croak.
