My only Ravenala sp. honkondamo is starting to show the red petioles. Does anyone have a larger ones to post some pics? I am curious to see if they will keep the red color. These have wider leaves than the typical madagascariensis sp. Any info?

Cool! Never saw that one before.

They retain some color according to rarepalmeseeds.com pic-a-tures.

So many species,

so little time.

We have 3 planted out but they don't have that much coloring. Yours is great!

nice color Mike, I tried some seed, but no luck with germination. There is a Ravenala in the dryer

Kahala area by diamond head, it has some brownish red color. Always wondered if it was

a honkondomo. It is fairly old. If yours keeps that color as and adult it would be stunning.

good luck

Where is  Ravenala honkondamo native to?  Madagascar too?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Here is an update.  I put it in the ground at the beginning of this Summer.  Al, they are native to Madagascar, like the other Ravenala.  The leaf base shows more red color when it is cooler out.  We have not been cold yet this year, knock on wood.  I got 2000 seed from RPS and 1 took. Glad I have this 1. Someone else has to have this, please post some pics.

Mike,

Did you get 2000 seeds and only one germinated?

I got 2 times 10 seeds from RPS but none germinated, so no picture, sorry.

6 months,

But when I checked I saw they all were rotten.
I have been much more successful with normal Ravenala seeds I got from RPS.
Actually, I noticed that choosing seeds marked "new" or "germinated" from RPS list helps to have very good results.

I have had the same exact findings. Thanks for the feed back :)

I'm bumping this up a few years B) as I just bought a nice large five meter clump of R. honkondambo.  Initially I didn't register it was this one as I was shopping in a hurry and it was covered in blue plastic tube for protection in transport. When I got home I was instantly surprised when I pulled the plastic and the thing sprung open! No ordinary R. madagascariensis. The base spreading up the petiole is pitch black.  Of course I rushed back to order two more clumps. I'm all for it as I have seen the common one planted close together in drifts were they look fantastic.  Of course the price suddenly went up which was annoying. Same same story "only got a few, wasn't going to sell them.  Just for you dear customer......" Ka-tching!!!

What confuses me is the common name "red travellers" when the red takes a back-seat almost entirely to dark purple black and attractive white waxy bloom for the rest. Unless there is a third sub-species. Basically all the "red" ones on the internet are black/purple too.  Not seen too much red on any except the one on RPS which has only a fair bit but not sure if that one is typical. Anyone else seeing red?! :D After seven years maybe?

Here is a recent update.  Still looking good and red, especially in winter.  If any one else has some of these, please post.

Any update on how it's doing? I have relatives in Tarpon Springs and it seems like it could make it there. I wouldn't mind getting them one of these from RPS.
