Anybody growing "Mexican Mangosteen" (Garcinia species)

Featured Replies

I'm curious about the "Mexican Mangosteen" -- the Garcinia/Rheedia from Mexico -- seed that is being sold by Fruit Lovers in Hawaii.

From what I've read it is bigger and perhaps even sweeter than Achachairu, which I've found to be quite hardy.

Is anybody here growing it?

I have never heard of this one and would also like to hear from someone growing it.

I have a teeny tiny one that has made like three leaves in 5 years.

I should mention I had forgotten about it till recently. Survived a few winters.

Interesting observations, i've heard this species progresses slowly at first, than speeds up after the 3rd or 4th year. It supposedly can start flowering/ attempting to set fruit by year 6 or 7 from seed. A couple people over on the fruit forum have had specimens fruit around year 5. Have heard similar info regarding potential cold tolerance.. far better thus far than thought. Hoping these do progress faster than my Cuban Mangosteen, which is still under a foot going into it's 3rd spring. It and Copernicia cowellii are in a race for the slowest  things I'm growing.

Almost all the Rheedia/Garcinia start pretty slow. Or get about a foot then sit there for a while. I have a few species, including aristata. My Cuban mangosteen  is about 8 ft or so tall. Was rescued from a sinkhole house in 2011.

Has anyone tasted the fruit of any of these yet?

Not the Mexican one, but the Cuban one yes. Tart, but good!
