Unbelievably, my red banana is throwing a new leaf.  All the current fried foliage surrounds it, and the main stem or pseudo-trunk feels firm but has black spots on the outer layers.

I saw this new leaf a while back but assumed I'd come home one day and it would be gone.  This weekend this new leaf began to emerge above the fried mess, so it's definately growing!  The tip of that new leaf feels not firm, a bit soft, though, so I'm still afraid it'll just fry up on me.

I took a pic and will post later today.  Do you guys think it might make it?  Is there anything I should do to help it along?  Guess I should give it some fertilizer....

That group of plants is a LOT tougher than you might think.

I don't know about Ensete, but some kinds of Musa will grow and fruit in Illinois.  (Siberia Light . . . .)

If you dig one out and don't get the entire root, even a teensy sliver will grow back into a new plant.

Kathy,

They are extreamly tough, and did you know that they are not a true banana?

Hi Jeff.  I guess I never really thought about whether they are a true banana, but I can see what you mean.  All my other musa's froze to the ground and I'll have to wait for new shoots.  This one though gives that banana look and sure complements the palms nicely! No matter, I'm still amazed it seems to have made so many nights below 30F.

I hope your Ensete survives - they're such nice tropicals.  I do have a question about them - is it true that they fruit and then die - and if so, do they send up pups, like true Musa?

If your E survives, and I'm sure it will, unless a Nuke Holotcaust happens soon, soon it will re-propose marriage, or at least borrowing the car.

Seriously.  They are that aggressive.
