July 20, 2013, PSSC Meeting

Hello, everyone.
Combine: (1) two legendary palm gardens, tended for loving decades by two long-time PSSC members; (2) a location near the beach; (3) a Saturday in July; and (4) a gathering of friends, a potluck lunch, with meat provided, and an auction. You get: the PSSC’s July 20, 2013 meeting, at the homes and gardens of Walter Frey (“Fry”), and Ricardo Luna, both in San Clemente.

Garden No. 1: Walter and Marla Frey , 1601 via Sage, San Clemente, CA 92673.
The Freys have taken maximum of advantage of their mild coastal climate to experiment with palms from all over the world. Highlights include: (1) truly spectacular blue Brahea species; (2) large Chambeyronias; and (3) many palms from Madagascar, New Caledonia and all the rest of the palm world.

Garden No. 2: Ricardo and Marianne Luna, 114 West Paseo De Cristobal, San Clemente, CA 92672.
The Luna place is within a short distance of the ocean, and the Lunas have pushed the envelope on rare palms very successfully. Highlights include: (1) a large Basselinia with a gorgeous crownshaft; (2) a nearly-mature Burretokentia koghiensis, ready to go to seed; (3) large Hedyscepe; (4) large Howea belmoreana: (5) a drop-dead gorgeous Dypsis baronii type with red petioles; (6) Chambeyronia macrocarpa setting seed; (7) Chambeyronia hookeri, very large; and (8) his famed Hyophorbe langencaulis and verschaffeltii.

Bring a friend! Or, bring an enemy if they love palms and you can make peace . . . Anyone can attend, membership is not needed. Though, we hope you become a member!

DIRECTIONS:
To the Walt and Marla Frey garden, 1601 Via Sage, San Clemente.
From either Los Angeles or San Diego:
Exit the I-5 at Camino de Estrella, and go east, back over the freeway. Camino de Estrella becomes Camino de los Mares (same road). Go 3 miles on Camino de los Mares till you reach Camino del Rio.
Then, make the next 5 right turns. Go to end of Cul de Sac to 1601.
Or, more precisely, (off Camino de los Mares) make a right on Camino del Rio, immediate right on Via Tulipan, immediate right on Via Tulipan again, right on Via Durazno, and right on Via Sage. The Freys' place is near the end on the cul-de-sac, with all the palms.
The PSSC Board meeting will be held at the Frey’s place.

To the Rick and Marianne Luna Garden, 114 West Paseo de Cristobal, San Clemente.
Exit the Frey’s garden. Take the 5 left turns to get back onto Camino de los Mares and return to the I-5 Freeway. Cross the bridge and make a left turn onto I-5 southbound. Exit El Camino Real (about 4 miles) and turn right onto El Camino Real. Turn left onto Christobal (about two blocks), there’s a 7-11 on the corner. Proceed to 114 Christobal (on right). The place with all the palms.
See you there!

ITINERARY
- PSSC Board meeting, 9:30 a.m.
- Tour the Frey garden all its glory, 10:30 a.m.
- Exit Frey garden, roar on down to the Luna garden
- Potluck Lunch Begins 12:00
- General Meeting and Plant Sale, 1:30 p.m.

This meeting will feature garden tours, lots of schmoozing and a potluck lunch with meat course provided. You can bring anything you like to eat to share. Not sure what to bring? If you like it, we'll like it too. It can be a dessert, a salad, a giant hoagie, appetizers, stews, pasta. It can be homemade or purchased. We’ll all be good and hungry after schlepping around palm gardens all morning! We greatly appreciate potluck dishes!

There will also be an auction of palms. Anyone may bring plants for the auction, though we ask that you abide by the following guidelines for best results: (1) plants in 1 - 5 gallon pots are best (big ones are too hard to carry); and (2) rare palms, please, no Phoenix canariensis, etc. If you wish you can donate 100% of proceeds to the PSSC, or 50% to PSSC and 50% to the donor.
