I think it was Wal I was speaking to the other day about the "Devine plum" Alcantera, so he may be interested in this photo. This plant came into our nursery the other day and we think it's a great plant and I thought it was well worth posting.... I'm sure many of you will enjoy these photos, of interest mainly here is the colour of the top sides of the leaf.

Pity this plant is coming to the end of its life!!

Very very beautiful Alcantarea Ben, love it, is it from the same breeders that bred Silver Plum here in Nth NSW ?, no doubt you know but when this stunner has flowered and small pups eventually start when she declines "leave them attached " so they get good growth. She's a Beauty :) Pete

That is stunning! How do all the alcantareas do in the sun? Can they all take full sun or just some of them? Am especially interested in the A. rubra. How large across is that one in the picture?

Hi Kahili, as far as I am aware they are all ok with full sun. The plant pictured is 1.1m across (just under 4 ft I think that equates to?)

G'day Pete, this plant is indeed from the nursery you speak of, they grow great Broms. They also supplied some beautiful vriesea hybrids.. some of which you can see in the photos below.

Unfortunately for me this plant is for sale and not mine, I will certainly pass the information on about the pups to the lucky buyer.

Hey Pete, looking again this comment and interested in your thoughts...

I have experienced that unlike neos, bills, aechmea etc, Alcanterea seems to pup relatively early in life ( about 4 or 5 years into their 12ish year life cycle )? I have found that Alcanterea pups are better being removed early or else they get squashed and never reach their potential?

I don't think there are pups currently on this plant, will check though.

I don't think there are huge numbers of this plant available, hope you get one!

Re Alcantareas Ben, I havnt had any here pup early but I don't have many, this pic below ( sorry its small) that I posted a near 2 yrs ago ? I only just recently pulled it out of the garden into a sunnier spot and it has a few good sized pups on now which where tiny grass like 18 mnths ago. No doubt Alcantareas all differ in when and how they do it but glad I left the small pups on the A glaziouana to "feed of their mum" :)

Re Large numbers of Devines :) Im only after a few and being a short drive away Im sure they will sell me a few, I remember getting the Silver Plums a few yrs ago and they where said to be "hard to get" and here was 1000s available :) ...but...Devine Plum is 1 of their New creations ( named just 7 mnths ago) so I will be "very happy" just to buy 3.

Ben, heres a shot today of the pups I left on the dying flowered mum, which is still pumpn out little ones, the 3 pups which are already of great size will be enough for me. Also Ben, the Old Original Alcantareas "used" to take "years " to flower whereas the hybrids and what we think are the real deals flower in just a few years, still all good fun Broms are eh. Pete :)
