I grew this as a kid. Not particularly difficult outdoors in coastal SoCal as a container plant. Never tried in the ground. Prob. not frost-tolerant.

Haven't seen for awhile.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

Beautiful plant! I've seen large ones in the San Francisco Bay Area (in semi-shade). They can grow to almost 10ft/3m tall.

I grew it for a few years in inland California. I got it up to about 6' or so-died back in the winters, eventually it disappeared.

What work, John ? Stick it in the ground in a semi-shady position, and keep the soil evenly moist.. Annie's Annuals has it in 4 inch pots for $ 5.00. This species survives at the Palmetum with no attention at all.

issues, Darold....1) semi-shady.......I reserve that for the palms that require it 2) Palmetum does not get 110 degree temps with no humidity or 24 degrees with a dry wind 3) they want 39 bucks for it, which probably wasn't bad, but too much for too little 4) Annie's is out of stock (I checked yesterday)...

I'll probably get one for the interior patio, but later...trying to work the backyard into shape....

Sent you a PM :)

I like the looks of this plant and begonias seem to like to grow in Puerto Rico. I think I'll keep my eyes open for this plant as well.... Thanks for the photo and information.

Used to be quite commonly sold in Queensland many years ago........like a lot of old style plants they have dissapeared from most nurseries and I have seen one in almost 20 years.
