Ceiba crispiflora-a summer flowering Floss Silk Tree

Recommended Posts

Ceiba crispiflora (formerly Chorisia) is a Floss Silk Tree that flowers in late summer instead of fall. Around here I usually see them start in late July/early August. Besides the earlier bloom period there are some minor differences in the flowers from those of the more commonly seen Ceiba speciosa. Many in Florida are probably the cultivar 'Sugar Loaf'.

This tree is in the "jungle" next to the Mexican pyramid at EPCOT.

There is also a very nice one next to Cinderella's Castle in Disney's Magic Kingdom but my photos I took yesterday somehow disappeared off my SD card.

Eric, are you saying 'Sugar Loaf' is a cultivar of C. crispiflora and not C. spesiosa?

Jody

Yes !

And then there is the hybrid 'TEM' which I belive is C. crispiflora 'Sugar Loaf' x C. speciosa

Looks just like C. speciosa to my untrained eye. Any difference in hardiness?
