In north Florida it is right on the cusp of it's hardiness at low 9a, though it came back front he roots after the 09/10 and 10/11 winters. One thing to consider about it is that it does send runners up and that these runners can be up to 5 ft away so plant it where you can cut these down if you don't want them. Though according to Len it sounds like they grow much more slowly in California.

Anyways, they are also quite nice next to a walkway as any time you brush the foliage it releases a strong aroma that is reminiscent of certain Indian foods!

These things sucker a lot. And when I say a lot, I am not exaggerating. They are worse than Clereodendron Starburst. They will pop up 30' or 40' away from the center of the tree. Worthwhile having, especially if you like the taste but plant where you can keep it under control.

So many species,

so little time.

Dave--

No problem. They're pretty common in the 562 and 714, esp. planted in Indian neighborhoods as a dooryard tree. Esp. common in mom and pop motel parking lots...

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

This tree is easy (in a pot) in Virginia and will flower and make pretty shiny pink to eventually black berries. It's no problem to start new plants from seed either. I moved a plant in a pot to Puerto Rico, but have been afraid to plant it for fear of it taking over the farm. It sounds like pot confinement/jail in the tropics is a good idea.
