Uncarina grandidieri is an interesting tree native to Madagascar. It has soft fuzzy leaves and bears bright yellow flowers in the summer. It is a member of Pedaliaceae, the Sesame Family. It grows 8-10 ft. tall. The seed capsules have nasty inward curving barbs.

I saw a mature one of these at a friend's garden and at the old American Orchid Society's garden. I think they are very interesting. I don't know what happened to the one at AOS - they are dismantling the garden as the property has been sold. Never see them for sale.

Great plant for a children's garden. Endless hours of entertainment watching the kiddies get their fingers stuck on the seed pods. Ouch!

So many species,

so little time.

There used to be a very nice specimen at Fairchild in the Spiny Madagascar Forest area. I haven't been there for several years so don't know if it is still there.
