The Palm Society of Southern California’s May, 2012 meeting will be held at the gardens of Ralph Velez and Larry Black, in Westminster and Fountain Valley, California on May 19, 2012.

PSSC meeting, tours, potluck lunch, and Auction/Raffle

Saturday May 19, 2012

ADDRESS # 1: 15461 Devonshire Circle, Westminster, CA 92683 Here we meet at one of the most-established gardens in Southern California, followed by a visit to a rising star.

The first stop will be the Ralph Velez garden in Westminster. If you're an old-time member, you've likely been here before. Mr. Velez, a long-time board member of the PSSC, started his garden in the early 1960s. Here you can see what some of the those little babies you bought will look like when they're mature. Some gardens you wonder what they have. In Ralph's wonder what he doesn't have. He has mature Dypsis in about 20 varieties, Roystonea, Caryota and many many more. This is a truly epic garden in an ordinary suburban 1/6-acre lot. But, there's a lot in that lot!

There will be a PSSC Board Meeting at 10:00 a.m. – if you’re a PSSC member, attend if you like. Participation is always encouraged.

ADDRESS # 2: 9166 Sara River Circle, Fountain Valley, CA 92708 After a tour and PSSC Board meeting at Ralph's we will get in our cars and roar feverishly over to the garden and home of Larry Black. Mr. Black is also a board member of the PSSC, and, like Ralph's garden, Larry's is on a suburban lot. Larry's collection isn't as extensive as Ralph's but what he has is marvelous. You might recall the fantastic Dypsis lanceolata in full sun in Issue No. 198 of the PSSC's Palm Journal, how it almost seemed to glow in the light. Come and see it "in the flesh." Larry also has one of the most spectacular Archontophoenix purpurea in Southern California, that's about twice as thick in the trunk as others -- including others in Larry's garden. And, the richness of its purple colored crownshaft has to be seen to be believed. So, come and see, and believe!

After the garden tour, we will have a potluck lunch at 11:30, followed by a short PSSC General Meeting at about 1:00 p.m. – if you’re a PSSC member, attend if you like. Participation is always encouraged.

Fried Chicken will be provided for the main course in the lunch. Please bring your favorite dish to share with us. Not sure what to bring? Bring what you like --- if you like it, odds are the rest of us will, too. If you hate to cook, it's okay to buy something. Salad, pasta, dessert, bring what you like. If in doubt, bring it on out!

The general meeting will be followed by the auction and raffle. The meeting will adjourn at the end of the auction between 3 and 4:00 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to donate plants for the auction. Palms are preferred, but we'll auction cycads and any other nifty plant you bring. Minimum donation on plant sales is 50% to the PSSC (with 50% to the donor), but you can donate more if you like. We will auction any plant you bring, but, please avoid very common plants and/or extremely large ones. The best sizes are in 1 - 5 gallon pots. We hope you also bring lots of money to bid on plants!

Will probably just shoot for the general meeting at 10:30 am. :) And can we really see all of Ralph's palms in 45 short minutes?

I didn't get a newsletter - which begs the question: what is going on with the Palm Society of Southern California? They appear more motivated maintaining PalmTalk decorum rather than retaining members...

I get by with a little help from my fronds
