So far these guys have done great here and they have bitchin new red leaves. They use these as street trees in Austin, where I'm from, so obviously they can take the cold and heat. I got the acorns from a fellow palmtalker. He collected them while he was in Texas.

Flying out on Sat to Broward/Dade for a month, maybe more if I can land better work. Gotta be back by in CA for a July court appearance, then maybe drive back to FL for good.

BTW, did you cold stratify those before planting? Some of the same seeds went to The Huntington but looks like they didn't get germination.

I would be interested in a few seeds if anyone has some available.

I did not cold stratify them, just popped em in the pot and they pretty much took off, mike may have before he gave them to me but I doubt it. Begginners luck I guess. I took the pic in the morning, you know the early bird gets the warm doughnuts! I do not have any seed left but I am going back to Austin in June, I'll chek out a few spots to see if I can score any acorns.

We have one growing well, it is about 6ft tall now. We are growing several Mexican/Texas oaks so far with success. We previously had a really nice specimen around 7-8ft tall but it was crushed under falling trees in Hurricane Charley.

The 2 I would love to get, Quercus rysophylla and Q. tarahumara.

Quercus corrugata is a very nice one too, growing well here.

I would love to get a Q. tarahumara as well, those are awesome trees. I think they would do well here in So Cal.

Jerry - That would be a very nice species to add at the Tree Zoo garden!

Looks like we gotta travel to Leu Gardens to see one for now. :)

Hold on to one or two for Kathy at The Huntington, if you would. Maybe Don can coordinate getting up there. Thanks.

Not sure if you'll find acorns in June or not. I collected in Dec or Jan. This tree had plenty on the ground. Was rather surprised the squirrels hadn't gotten all of them.
