Hmmmmm, Ginger, Heleconia, Canna, Strezelia, Ravenala? There are several bananas, musa sp., that do not fruit as well.

Are you thinking of musa bajoo (which is a banana plant but no fruit)? Hardiest of the musa family I believe.

The other plant that comes to mind would be the giant birds of paradise (white flower, not orange), Strelitzia nicolai.

Since the only way to propagate Ensete is by seed, they do have "fruit"....not too tasty or abundantly fleshy, but fruit nevertheless.

Musa basjoo does fruit in areas where it is not damaged down to the corm in the winter, and even in Z7 where the pseudostem is protected it will produce seed.

Wonder why the O.P. hasn't responded with a bit more information about what she was thinking about? Lots of good answers in a general way here, but she might also have been seeing/thinking of Heliconias, Musella lasiocarpa, Canna musifolia, etc.
