Wal..

They are considered a noxtious plant in NZ. Very invasive and smother native bush. If they are that rampant here they are going to be a lot worse in Queensland..

Northern banana passionfruit

Passiflora tarminiana

Northern banana passionfruit

Northern banana passionfruit

Legal Status: Unwanted Organism - BNZ

Status in New Zealand: Established

Organism: Land plants

Pest and disease search

Synonyms

Passiflora mixta (name incorrectly used)

Description

Northern banana passionfruit is a high-climbing vine which produces pink tubular flowers throughout the year. These develop into oval fruit that turn yellow or orange-yellow when ripe. It is very similar to banana passionfruit. A useful way to tell them apart is by the flowers: the length of the floral tube is shorter in northern banana passionfruit (6-8 cm) than in banana passionfruit (8-9.5 cm), while the flower lobes are longer in northern banana passionfruit (4-6.5 cm compared to 2-3.8 cm in banana passionfruit). Both species are pest plants.

Impact

Northern banana passionfruit is an aggressively invasive vine native to the Andes that invades disturbed areas. Its effects include the smothering of trees, a reduction in biodiversity and the encouragement of invasive species such as feral pigs, which feed on the fruit. This species is a major weed in Hawaii.

Wal, don't think that one would be a problem in your area. Likes a cooler climate. Try P. quadrandgularis. Much more awesomer.

Emmett, that's cool. Are those all growing in San Diego? I was thinking about ordering some P mollisima seeds, but didn't know if it would fruit here. How's the fruit? Any chance I could get a cutting off your plant?

Haven't tried one yet. If you want them for eating you can't beat Fredericks.

I remember a banana passionfruit vine on the back fence of my childhood home in Geelong , Victoria . Tons of fruit we ate with a sprinkle of icing-sugar , as it was a little sour and bland.

Wal , have heard its not great in Qld .

Golden Hawaiian , Pananma red , and many others have much more flavour .

Michael in palm paradise,

Tully, wet tropics in Australia, over 4 meters of rain every year.

Same here Malcolm...gully choking nightmare around Hobart - frost proof, drought proof, possum proof.

Makes me think I should plant some!

We've been harvesting bucketloads of fruit off our grafted 'Nellie Kelly' Black Passionfruit (P.edulis on caerulea rootstock) - fantastic fruit and a good grower in our colder climate.

Cheers,

Thanks for all the passion fruit pictures. The red flowered one in this pictures is we call maracuja do mato, or wild passion fruit here in Amazonia. It is native to the region and grows in the forest all over the place. It is commonly found in areas of seconddary forest as there is more light.

Passion fruit (more commonly called 'Lilikoi' in Hawaii) is a popular flavor used especially in drinks but also in desserts, jellies, etc. Presently I'm only growing a red flowered cultivar (see pic below). Don, is this the same as the one you mentioned growing wild in Amazonia? Anyone know the species name for it?

post-90-022700500 1313915264_thumb.jpg

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Al,

The name that I came up with is Passiflora nitida.
