My last stay on the Big Island included a great deal of rain. That shouldn't be a surprise, but many times the days are clear and the wet comes at night or early morning. This time I was able to enjoy the color the rain brings out in the plants.

Picked up several Vriesea hybrids at a farmers market for a song, no names attached. These are "seconds" from a commercial grower, I believe. I've dropped the pots into cavities in an old moss and fern-covered tree stump. Orchids are also mounted on the stump.

The rain seems to intensify the colors in Aechmea blanchettiana 'orange' and the Neoregelia --I think this was called 'Candy Apple' -- just a monster-size neo that I've allowed to clump.

Kim,

I love those Vriesea hybrids, and definitely need to get some! :) As a matter of fact, I want quite a few! But, seems I'm sidetracked right now planting palms! Gives me something to look forward to!

WELL. Since rain is a rare commodity around here, and it just HAPPENED to be drizzling outside, I figured I should run out and snap...

Here is the big pile of my recent finds...must say it still looks pretty good!

yeah I notice that fantastic colors come out when I wet the leaves of my broms. that's why I like watering then so much even If I don't need to.

Love the vrisea Hybrids. those were offered here years ago then suddenly disappeared. I need to snatch one up when they become available.

Bo, I have a good contact for you for the vriesea. Oh wait, I got that contact from you!

Wow, Bill, smashing group photo of your collection in the mist, a riot of color! Bet they got a good drenching today and yesterday.

Thanks for the names, Pete. I see you know your broms! Respect!

Gonzer, the rain did all the photoshopping for me this time. :)

Gene, your garden is divine, but a few tesselated vriesea might be just the touch... :winkie:

Ari, so do you have to irrigate during the dry season? Seems that would be a major chore on your large parcel.

Yes.... I do irrigate. I have been installing sprinkler system as I am planting. It was manual system originally and I only had to turn on and off taps to irrigate certain part of the garden. 2 years ago, Scott installed automated system with controller, solenoids and all... now we just have to check all the sprinkler heads every now and then to make sure they are not blocked.

Regards, Ari :)
