Interesting. A few comments, questions:

-- Dracaena arborea pics seem to be of two separate species, unless one had excessive leaf polish applied.

-- variegated Monsteras don't appear terribly different. Did someone actually get a PPAF for 'Cheesecake'?

-- RE: Podocarpus henkelii: see above about excessive leaf polish...

silvervase told me they were blue and not dyed I must have heard wrong

Eric, thanks for the photos from TPIE. I've meant to attend for the past 3 years but never made it for one reason or the other. Hopefully next year.

The blue phalaenopsis is not dyed. A process allows the plant to take up the coloring that is manifested on the flower. The next time the plant flowers it will be white. The premium price that is charged is for a one time event.

wholesale on the blue orchid is $12.00 so not such a badprice but people were willing tp pay 50.00 to take 1 home during the show

They said they were white ones and were injected. Also was told sometimes the 2nd flowering has some blue coloring in it but usually reverts back to white.

I hope the orchid growers do not follow the example of the Rainbow Roses. Those look terribly gaudy while these blue orchids still look reasonably natural.

Also who invented those "Orchids in ice"? Pure plant cruelty!

That Anthirium 'Otazu' is Otawesume! Get it? Otawesume? :hmm:

I saw some of these at the grocery store around Christmas time, but they were too expensive to buy.

Eric,

Great photos! Thanks for sharing.

I was at Vero last weekend and those blue orchids were selling like hotcakes! One of the vendors said they would bloom white next year and blue the next year. I think he was hoping the plant would die before the 3rd blooming! They are injected and will not return blue, except as Eric mentioned, a slight edging of blue the next bloom cycle. And I think they look disturbing.

Many of the vendors OD with the leaf shine, I hate seeing plants doused in it.

The vendor with the 'Cheesecake' monstera, not sure if it was patented but not sure if they even knew much about it, they were marketing it as Philodendron 'Cheesecake'

I noticed 2 reactions to the blue orchids; either vomiting or they loved it. It was mainly plant people that hated them and "normal public" that liked them. Me, I thought they were unique and see a place for them but it was very misleading as it was made to believe that these were natural blue cultivars.

Up north, here at Longwwod Gardens outside Philly, they are having their "Orchid Extravaganza" and also have a display of the injected blue phals. They drew attention to themselves the minute I entered the area! They certainly have garnered alot of attention from visitors! It was SRO waiting to get up there to take a closer look!!

Thanks for the great post and photos, Eric!

As much as I love blue flowers... I wouldn't go for them since they are unnatural. Thanks for posting, Eric... some nice plants there.

They are offering the 'blue' phals in my local garden center for $49.95. They still have many left as of yesterday, but they are no more tempting to me than the spray painted poinsettias with glitter in December!

Cool, thanks for posting Eric, Monstera cheescake, I wonder if we can steal that name idea for some of the variegated palms around.

Foxy Lady sp.cheesecake ? maybe not.
