Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

You usually can't tell that it is watermelon until it starts to trunk or bigger. I have bought regular macrocarpa that have turned out to be watermelon and the other way around. So, if you really want a watermelon I suggest you buy a larger palm that is already showing markings.

I MOST DEFINITELY second what Jeff said!!! (But then again, most I've seen from Rancho S. have turned out to be the watermelon type, but they don't advertise them as such...)

Thanks guys for your networking. I plan to make a drive out to Rancho S. as soon as we start getting better weather. I had a few people tell me to go check them out.

And I THIRD what Jeff said.

I've got one that started out normal and boring and turned into a real watermelon, more water (yellow) than melon (green).

Larger plants are better if you must have the WM.
