Actually this Hong Kong Orchid has been in bloom nearly all year for some reason but it is definitely putting out some new flowers now:

It's one of the best flowering trees.

No seeds, no messy seedpods.

Just lots and lots of blossoms.

Hooray!

So, that's what its supposed to look like. On a good year, mine makes a fourth as many blooms. Last year it froze to the ground, but it did come back from the roots. Maybe next year, I'll see a bloom. Until then, I am quite happy to live vicariously through you. Thanks for posting.

I had a bauhinia here but it had long seed pods and I spent years ripping out baby bauhinias by the truck load. Eventually I paid to get the thing cut down. Yes the flowers were lovely but not worth the price. Mine flowered on and off all summer too.

Dave whats the botanical name of the species without seed pods ? The flowers and the leaves look the same as my messy one.

It will drop many leaves and flower petals on the cement and sidewalk. I lopped off 60% of my tree every year and it come back strong like it never miss a beat. This is one of the few trees that topping makes it look better and contain the size. I cannot get rid of it because it is one of the few plants in the yard the the wife bought.

My Bauhinia blakeana or HONG KONG ORCHID TREE is in full flower mode this time of year also, though true, it does tend to flower some pretty much all year. This hybrid tree does not develop seed pods. I have mine planted where the fallen leaves and flowers only serve as mulch and weed preventative so there's no problem with cleanup. I do have an Encephalartos villosus planted underneath it and sometimes I do hose off the leaves to remove any flowers that refused to fall on their own accord.

Bigfrond, I did the same last year. I lopped off at least 1/3 of the tree as it was getting a bit big and tall and it came back nicer than ever! Hey almost every tree has its pluses and minuses and the Hong Kong Orchid tree, for me, has more pluses than minuses. Here are 2- pics of our tree looking down at it from the lanai.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Hey Al, this is a great tree if planted like you, away from the sidewalk and lawn.
